1987-2001. Embracing nature, collaboration, expansion of audience-interactive installations

The spiritual center of McLean's work has always been his communing with nature.  An avid hiker and explorer along with wife Priscilla, he has hiked the trails in several continents and recorded sound and video to provide significant content to their collaborative work.  This has come to the fore especially in this period in works such as the iconic Rainforest installation which became the first in a long sequence of these installations, which often lasted several days in a venue.  These installations came to be a most important part of their creative output, not only in themselves, but also in the works that were spawned from them (Rainforest Images, MILLing in the ENNIUM).  This era additionally saw the increased collaboration between Barton and Priscilla, at times even to the point where they both composed the exact same work (Rainforest Images).
