1981-1986: Technology, Nahuatl poetry, and  the last non-electronic works

By this time, McLean had consolidated his new notation experiments into a cohesive new method, where, instead of vertical or horizontal sonorities in meter, the notation enabled sound mass textures. Additionally, the Nahuatl poetry of pre-Columbian times occupied his interest, along with the production of his most significant pure chamber works such as the Ritual of the Dawn (using these new notational procedures). His 1985 collaboration with Priscilla in their first McLean Mix collaboration "In Wilderness is the Preservation of the World" began a lifelong adventures of their collaborations in McLean Mix touring. Similarly, this work initiated a more overt attention to the sounds of nature, and their blending with more traditional sounds in a more gestural mode. In 1985 the McLeans developed their first computer-driven studio with the Macintosh Plus and Mark of the Unicorn's Performer, later cast aside for Opcode's Vision and then Studio Vision, which provided the basis for much of their output during these years.
