Dreamscapes. 2016.

Dur. 32:47.

McLean relates: "This work is more properly described, not as an abstract video with sound, as most classical videos are. Rather, it should be considered as a 5 -section suite of music with video accompaniment, the visual element existing primarily to add another dimension to the listening experience, the music element being the prominent one.

"My approach to sound creation might be described as my searching in a parallel universe to create sounds which are "physically  plausibile" as Carla Scaletti describes them. Hence, the listener of my music is often confronted with music that is eerily familiar yet unrecognizable in its specific derivation."

The music was exclusively created using the Symbolic Sound Corporation's Kyma 7, in my estimation the most powerful comprehensive music creation system ever devised. In its five sections I have explored many of its techniques, and each section is quite different from the others in this regard. Its creation took the better part of two years of constant work, and each section has undergone several revisions."

Sections (continuous):

  • 1. Between States. Symphonic and dreamy.

  • 2. Deep Slumber. Probing the deepest subconscious

  • 3. Thrush Dream.  Wood thrush emulated via basic oscillator and pattern creation; the only one of the four that does not use actual samples.

  • 4. Discombobulation: Taking a fairly conservative oboe duet and scrambling its order into many semi-repetitive pieces. Also using samples of a former trip for piano, cello, and violin of mine. Some abrupt surprises.

  • 5. Nightmare fantasies: Thrusting between wild and sublime sections. Many samples too numerous to mention.
