!metaSinfonica. 2013

Intro:  7:33. Main: 13:06

This is the first standalone work with Kyma for McLean. Particularly noteworthy is the use of a Kyma algorithm known as "samplebits," where an existing passage is scrambled in quasi-random fashion resulting in a completely new melodic or harmonic result, while maintaining the character of the original (McLean also used this in the guitar of "Peter's People.")  Many years ago McLean sampled a number of metallic objects (truck lifts, door squeaks, wheelbarrows, rusty gates, etc). These are heard here as actual instruments of McLean's "new" orchestra, along with some of the traditional orchestral instruments, all sampled and modified in various ways. Prominent also is the use of the Rodman Bow Chime, which is bowed and struck in various ways. Both sets of materials evoke a dark, brooding character to the work, albeit with some surprises.  Everything you hear in these two works is the result of being formed on a Kyma Timeline and then played back to record as stereo audio compositions.
