Pterodactyl (2021)

The pristine forest has a magic about it…as one walks deeper into the abyss, a presence of creatures long since extinct is felt, their ghosts crying out while haunting the primeval shadows…. The actual sounds used are from many sources, including studio recordings of Charlie Toquarz (single and double reeds) and Barton McLean (recorder and clariflute—an instrument with a clarinet mouthpiece and a recorder body). The most prominent background sounds are excerpts from another composition by Barton McLean called “Pathways” for wind ensemble, also available on McLean’s Youtube playlist (see below).

As in many of McLean’s Youtube videos, the prominent creative force is the music, which should exist on its own without visual help. And so, McLean superimposes visualization not to compete with, but rather to enhance the music.
